The short answer
After a hailstorm in Missouri, check for dented gutters, downspouts and vents, granules washing out of the downspouts, and bruised or cracked shingles, then get a free inspection with photos. If there is damage, you file the claim with your insurance company yourself; a contractor can give you photos and a written estimate. Missouri law does not allow roofing contractors to pay your deductible or negotiate your claim, and it gives you the right to cancel a roofing contract if your insurer denies the claim.
When hail hits in Missouri
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, most significant hail in Missouri and Illinois falls in spring and early summer, March through June. It can happen in any season, so check after any strong storm.
Signs of hail damage
From the ground: dents in gutters, downspouts, metal vents and window wraps; granules piling up at downspout outlets; dented siding or screens. On the roof (leave this to a pro): bruised or cracked shingles, exposed mat, and damaged ridge caps.
How the claim works
Report the damage to your insurer and schedule their adjuster. You deal with your insurance company directly. We provide clear photos and a written estimate you can share, and we explain what we found.
Your rights under Missouri law
Missouri law (RSMo 407.725) does not allow a residential roofing contractor to pay, waive or rebate your deductible, or to represent or negotiate your insurance claim for you. Be wary of anyone who offers to.
If you sign a roofing contract that will be paid by insurance and your insurer later tells you in writing that all or part of the claim is not covered, you can cancel the contract within five business days of that notice. We include this notice in writing on every insurance job.
Watch out for storm chasers
After big storms, out-of-town crews knock on doors. Check for a local address and phone number, reviews, and BBB standing before you sign anything.
