The short answer
In St. Louis, schedule gutter cleaning twice a year: in late spring (May to June) after the seed and flower drop, and in late fall (late November to mid-December) after most leaves are down. Homes under pin oaks, which hold leaves into winter, or under pines may need a third cleaning in late winter or early spring.
Late spring
Maple seeds, oak catkins and blossoms fill gutters in April and May. Cleaning after they drop clears gutters before summer storms, when you need them most.
Late fall
Waiting until most leaves are down means one thorough cleaning instead of two half-cleanings. In most St. Louis neighborhoods that is late November into December, before freezing weather turns wet leaves into ice.
A third cleaning if you need it
Pin oaks and some other oaks keep dropping leaves through winter, and pines shed needles year-round. A late-winter cleaning catches what came down after the fall visit.
Or skip the schedule
Gutter guards end the routine cleanings. If you're cleaning three times a year, guards usually pay for themselves.
